Hyperactivity and Distraction: Breaks and Check-Ins

Distracted kids are more able to focus if they are allowed breaks. Teachers should also check in with their distracted students frequently.

Transcript:

When you're dealing with distracted students, having them taking breaks and also you as the teacher checking in with them frequently is essential to get them where they need to be. If you are a distracted adult in your daily life, and you don't take a break with what you're doing, you're not going to do it very well. So, I think about this in my classroom when I think about students whose focus is just gone almost immediately. You have to let them take a walk, physically go get a drink of water, and then refocus to the task at hand. Also, making sure that you're able to check in with them periodically let's them know that they're accountable and responsible for the work they're doing.
