Julius Sterling Morton, newspaper publisher, political leader, and avid nature lover, helped establish the first Arbor Day in Nebraska, in 1872. Soon other states began to recognize the importance of tree planting. Today, Arbor Day is observed in most states of the United States and in most provinces of Canada.
