Plant Eaters and Meat Eaters

Objectives

  • Students will classify.

Materials

  • Celery
  • Grapes
  • Carrots
  • Eggs
  • Lunch meat (ham or turkey)

Procedures

  1. Talk about how dinosaurs were divided into two groups: plant eaters and meat eaters. Some animals today eat only plants, like rabbits, giraffes, and caterpillars. Other animals eat only meat, such as lions and wolves.
Some animals eat plants and meat.
  2. What do plant eaters eat? What do meat eaters eat?
  3. Let the children classify the foods you brought in as "plants" or "meat," thenlet them decide if they want to be plant eaters, meat eaters or both, and taste the food.
Extension Activities:
  • Go to the library and get a book on dinosaurs. Which dinosaurs wereplant eaters? Which ones were meat eaters?
  • Give children a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On oneside write "plants," and on the other side write "meats." Ask them to cutout magazine pictures or draw pictures of food to go on both sides.
  • Excerpt from Science Surprises!.

In this science lesson plan, elementary students will learn about dinosaurs that were meat eaters versus plant eaters, and will classify different foods.
