Marine Iguanas

Objectives
- Students will use vocabulary related to marine iguanas.
- Students will learn about the unusual habitat of the Galapagos Islands.
- Students will learn how marine iguanas adapt to their environment.

Procedures
- Introduce key vocabulary: cold-blooded, fauna, habitat, herbivore, island, marine, reptile, seaweed.
- Have students use reference materials (encyclopedias, books, magazines) or visit the Marine Iguana website.
- Direct students to complete the Marine Iguana handout.
- Have students work individually or with partners.
- Set up a time when students can share their discoveries.
Assessment
Use the Scoring Guide Rubric to assess students' understanding of the topic and their ability to take notes.Extension Activities
- Direct students to The Galapagos Islands (http://www.worldwildlife.org/wildworld/profiles/g200/g132.html) where they can learn about the conservation challenges that the island faces. Encourage students to view the "Slide Show" and then select several interesting facts from the "Fact Stack" to post on a bulletin board.
