Analyzing "The Monkey's Paw"

Objectives
- Students will analyze the characters, style, tone, and content of the story "The Monkey's Paw".
- Students will learn new vocabulary words.
- Students will practice their writing skills.
Materials
One copy of the following for each student.
Procedures

Distribute copies of "The Monkey's Paw", and "The Monkey's Paw" vocabulary sheet.
- Before students read the story, it is essential for them to understand the vocabulary words because there are so many of them. Play Vocabulary Bingo as a way to familiarize students with the new words.
- Give students time to read the story either in class or for homework.
- Distribute the Reading for Meaning handout and allow students to write down answers to the questions.
- Facilitate a class discussion about the questions.
- For homework, ask students to either create their own horror story (or write an alternate ending to this story) imitating Jacobs style of writing.
