Analyzing "The Monkey's Paw"

Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Objectives

  • Students will analyze the characters, style, tone, and content of the story "The Monkey's Paw".
  • Students will learn new vocabulary words.
  • Students will practice their writing skills.

Materials

One copy of the following for each student.

Procedures

  1. Distribute copies of "The Monkey's Paw", and "The Monkey's Paw" vocabulary sheet.

  2. Before students read the story, it is essential for them to understand the vocabulary words because there are so many of them. Play Vocabulary Bingo as a way to familiarize students with the new words.

  3. Give students time to read the story either in class or for homework.

  4. Distribute the Reading for Meaning handout and allow students to write down answers to the questions.

  5. Facilitate a class discussion about the questions.

  6. For homework, ask students to either create their own horror story (or write an alternate ending to this story) imitating Jacobs style of writing.
