The Sunflower

Grade Levels: Pre-K - 2

Objectives

  • Students will be introduced to a unit on Botany.
  • Students will learn the parts of the plant: roots, stem, petals, and seeds.
  • Students will learn how to describe and draw something.
  • Students will practice estimating and counting.

Materials

  • A whole sunflower plant.
  • Paper
  • Crayons

Procedures

1. Show students a sunflower plant (roots and all).

2. Ask them to describe what they see.

3. Identify the parts (roots, stem, petals, and seeds) with them.

4. Give students a large piece (12x18) of white drawing paper.

5. Instruct them to put their name in the lower left hand corner.

6. Ask them to tell how many petals they think there are.

7. Count how many petals are on the flower. Post it on the board.

8. Estimate the number of seeds.

9. Count how many seeds. Post it on the board.

10. Do the same for the roots and stem.

11. Have students draw the sunflower based on their observations and data collected.

12. When the sunflower seeds are dried (in a few weeks) you can give each student several to take home and plant next spring.
