Procedures

Notes: This activity should be developed in consultation with other subject area teachers. The questions placed on the Knowledge Cards should reinforce what is being taught at the time in other subjects.

  1. In this variation of "freeze tag," students should find an open space within the boundaries of the basketball court.
  2. Designate three or four "taggers" and three or four "thawers."
  3. Give each tagger a foam Frisbee or ball, and the thawers each a set of Knowledge Cards.
  4. On the "go" signal, students begin the tag game.
  5. When tagged, the student stops and begins doing jumping jacks.
  6. The thawer's role is to find a student who has been tagged and ask that student a question.
  7. If the question is answered correctly, the student goes free; if answered incorrectly, she or he is given another question.
  8. If the second question is answered incorrectly, the student must go to the side and complete a "Challenge Task" before reentering the game.

Note: With lower-ability students – especially academically – allow the thawer to give hints or even change the question to something easier. For example: In what direction does the sun rise? What is the capital of this state?

Sample Physical Challenges:
It is best to use activities that do not need equipment.

10 vertical jumps, 10 push-ups, 15 crunches, 25 skier's jumps over a line, rub head and pat stomach 10 times

Sample Knowledge Cards:
Remember to ask other staff members for questions and answers related to areas that are being covered in their classes. This activity should help to reinforce academic knowledge.

Put on 3" x 5" cards (question and answer on the same side)

  2. What do the initials "DC" (which follow Washington) stand for? (District of Columbia)
  3. What state did not send a delegate to the convention to revise the Articles of the Constitution? (Rhode Island)
