Man's Best Friend

Overview


Students learn all about man's best friend at a fun website, created for and by elementary age children.

Objectives


  • Students will use vocabulary related to dogs and other pets.
  • Students will identify an author's viewpoint about dogs.
  • Students will express a personal opinion about dogs as pets.

Materials

Procedures

  • Introduce key vocabulary: biography, breeder, exercise, favorite, interview, information, respect
  • Have students work with partners to complete the first question on the Man's Best Friend Worksheet Can a dog be a friend? after exploring the website: Man's Best Friend.
  • Have students work individually on the second question. Provide paper or poster board for students to create their own colorful pages.
  • Set up a time for students to gather in groups and share their discoveries, opinions, and web pages.

Assessment


Use a rubric to assess students' ability to recognize an author's viewpoint and to formulate their own.

  • Encourage students to visit Pet Arena http://www.kidscom.com/chat/petarena/petarena.htmll to learn what kids around the world have to say about various pets. After exploring the site, let students poll their classmates and make a graph entitled "Favorite Pets in Our Class."
  • Have students go to Pet Stories http://www.shirleymaclaine.com/stories/pets/archive to read about some unusual and inspiring pets. Then encourage them to write stories about their own pets and create a class book of Pet Stories.
