Afikomen Art

An Afikomen that is used to hold the matzoh is a necessary component of the Seder dinner. You can get your family involved in making this family heirloom out of foam sheets. The stiffness of this material will help keep the matzoh from cracking.

Level: Easy

Time involved: Half to one hour

Materials:

  • Two 9x 12 inch blue foam sheets
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Two buttons
  • Needle and thread
  • Piece of jewelry wire or elastic
  • Wire cutters
  • Bag of foam letters
  1. Cut 3 inches off a blue foam sheet. Lay the smaller piece of foam on top of the larger piece, and line them up at the bottom along the 9-inch length. Glue the top sheet onto the bottom sheet around the sides and bottom and allow to dry.

  2. Fold the extra length from the bottom sheet over the bag to form a flap to close the bag. Sew a button on the front of the flap. Sew a second button just below this button on the top foam sheet. Cut a small piece of elastic or jewelry wire to wrap around the two buttons to close the bag.

  3. Gather together the foam letters spelling “Afikomen” and glue them to the front of the bag.

Insert the matzoh into the bag and enjoy the hunt for your handmade Afikomen.
