Teach students how to evaluate music and music performances. Browse these music lessons and references for ways to address the seventh National Standard for Music Education in your classroom. The activities below will encourage students to pay attention to details and will help them think critically about the arts. Students will learn how to evaluate opera, pop, and Native American music through comparisons and by making connections with other disciplines. |
Lessons & ActivitiesIntroduce your class to the artistic characters, vocal music, and instruments of Chinese opera. Work with students to improvise dialogue (speaking and singing), music, and scenery to turn a story into an emotional performance. Students discover that patterns in music that relate to the Fibonacci Sequence. The melody of the *NSYNC song Tearing up My Heart is examined in detail by listening to the recording, reading sheet music, and singing the song. Students in grades 9-12 evaluate a performance, composition, arrangement, or improvisation by comparing it to similar or exemplary models.
