Blocks and Bones
Grade Levels: 1 - 2
Excerpted from Science Surprises!
Objectives
- Students will use blocks to build the shape of their skeletons.
- Students will observe and communicate findings about the human body and bones.
Materials
- Unit blocks
- Paper plates
- Crayons
Directions
- Ask the children to color the paper plates to look like their faces. (Make multicolor crayons, yarn, buttons, and other collage materials available to them.)
- Have the children put their plates on the floor, then use the unit blocks to build their skeletons.
- Encourage the children to match up the blocks to the sizes of their different bones.
Challenges
- Ask the children to find out how long they were when they were born. Cut a piece of yarn that length. Cut a piece of yarn their height now and let them compare how much they've grown.
- What happens if you break a bone? Borrow an X-ray from a doctor's office for the children to observe.
