Blocks and Bones

Grade Levels: 1 - 2

Excerpted from Science Surprises!

Objectives

  • Students will use blocks to build the shape of their skeletons.
  • Students will observe and communicate findings about the human body and bones.

Materials

  • Unit blocks
  • Paper plates
  • Crayons

Directions

  1. Ask the children to color the paper plates to look like their faces. (Make multicolor crayons, yarn, buttons, and other collage materials available to them.)
  2. Have the children put their plates on the floor, then use the unit blocks to build their skeletons.
  3. Encourage the children to match up the blocks to the sizes of their different bones.

Challenges

  • Ask the children to find out how long they were when they were born. Cut a piece of yarn that length. Cut a piece of yarn their height now and let them compare how much they've grown.
  • What happens if you break a bone? Borrow an X-ray from a doctor's office for the children to observe.
