Predictions: Individual and Team
Grade Levels: 4 - 6
Objectives
- Students will use mathematical and thinking skills.
Materials
- Beanbags, jump ropes, volleyballs, hula hoops, and other equipment, depending on skill development focus
- Score cards (see below) and pencils
Procedures
Notes: Provide students with enough time to discuss, record, and
calculate their scores before rotating. Assign students to groups where appropriate
cooperative learning situations may be used; for example, student leaders can assist
others with math skills.
- Arrange six or more challenging stations around the gym.
- Have students get in
groups of approximately five, and assign each group to a station.
- After the groups
have been assigned, give each team a score card and pencil (if doing individual prediction, give each student a score card).
- To begin, give a "ready" signal and allow students 30 to 45 seconds to discuss,
predict, and write down what their results will be at that station.
- On the "go" signal,
students do the activity for 3 minutes.
- After the 3 minutes of activity, students stop
and record their actual score, and calculate the difference between their prediction
and actual score.
- Continue until each group has completed all stations.
- At the conclusion, discuss with students the accuracy of their predictions.
Sample Stations
Push-Ups: Using any variation, how many push-ups can the team, a pair, or an individual, do in 3 minutes? (Not all team members must go for the entire 3 minutes.)
Beanbag Pick-Up: Place a large number of beanbags or other objects at one end
of the gym. Have students line up in relay lines at the other end. Students run one
at a time, take one beanbag, and return to the group. The task is to predict how
many beanbags the team, or individual, will return in 3 minutes.
Curl-Ups: How many curl-ups can the team, or individual, do in 3 minutes?
Ball Hop: Putting a ball between their knees, students hop from one line to another. The task is to see how many round trips the team, or individual student, can
make in 3 minutes. (If the ball drops, it must be picked up, and the student returns
to the closest line already touched.)
Speed Jumps: How many successful turns of a jump rope can the team, or individual, make in 3 minutes?
Volleyball Set: Each team member is given a volleyball or trainer. The task is for
each student to volley the ball overhead as many times as he or she can in 3 minutes. If the ball drops or is caught, the count resumes at the last successful number.
