South American Mountain Peaks
Grade Levels: 3 - 5
Objectives- Students will learn about many mountains in South America.
- Students will create addition and subtraction word problems.
Materials
- South American Mountain Peaks worksheet
- Internet access or reference collection
Procedures
- Have students use the Internet (or reference books) to research the mountains of South America. A chart of the Highest Mountain Peaks of the World is a helpful reference. They will use that information to complete the worksheet.
- Students can complete the worksheet individually or in pairs.
- Select a time in class when students can share their word problems, or swap problems with a friend and solve.
Assessment
Students should be able to:
- solve addition and subtraction word problems.
- use data to write word problems that require the use of addition and subtraction.
Extension Activities
- Choose from a large collection of cross-curricular activities for all grade levels.
- Direct students to Dinosaurs (http://www.cbv.ns.ca/marigold/history/dinosaurs/dinosaurs.html) where they can open several different dinosaur data files and learn interesting facts. Instruct students to write word problems using the data of five or more dinosaurs.
- Invite students to visit Football (http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education/projects/) where they will learn how to determine distance on a football field. Challenge students to write some of their own football word problems.
