Practicing Place Value With Insect Facts

Grade Levels: 3 - 5

Objectives

  • Students will research insect data for interesting facts.
  • Students will write numbers in three ways: standard form, expanded form, and word name.
  • Students will explore place-value relationships.

Materials

Procedures

  1. Introduce key vocabulary: digit, expanded form, place value, standard form, word name.
  2. To complete the Insects and Place Value worksheet students will explore websites.
  3. Students may work in pairs or small groups.
  4. Invite students to share their discoveries in a class discussion.

Assessment

Use students' activity sheet responses and class discussion participation to evaluate their ability to find facts, write numbers in three different forms, and understand place-value relationships.
