Scientists have discovered over one million different types of insects! There may be even more that we don't yet know about. In this activity, you'll learn interesting insect facts.
1. Go to the Welcome to the Wonderful World of Insects website (http://www.earthlife.net/insects/six01.html). Search the information provided to answer questions 2-6.
2. Write the word name for the number of beetle families.
3. How many thousands of species of beetles are there? Write your answer in standard form.
4. What is the weight of the heaviest insect in the world? This insect can be found in New Zealand. Write the word name for its weight.
5. How many hundreds of square centimeters does the wingspan of the largest insect cover? Write your answer in standard form.
6. An ant colony found in Japan has nests that are connected. How many thousands of nests are connected in this colony? Write your answer in standard form.
7. Visit Insecta Inspecta World (http://www.insecta-inspecta.com/) and find three interesting facts that contain a number. Write each number in three ways: standard form, expanded form, and word name.
