Message from the Man
Welcome to the New! Improved! Better than Ever! Bruce Coville web page.
Those of you who have checked in here off and on for the last few years may well be askingWell, what took you so long?
The answer is mostly the same as it was the last time: most of the energy around herenot only mine, but also my staff'sis being poured into Full Cast Audio. Even so, my webmaster has been working to create this spiffy new version of this site, which has updates on my books, as well as a soon-to-be-in-place system that will let those of you who want to order autographed copies use your credit cards on line, rather than having to send in the order form with a check.
Of course, the thing most people checking in here probably want to ask is: “What's up with that third unicorn book?”
All I can say is, I'm still working on it, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. The manuscript stands at about 360 pages as of this writing, and I've still got a ways to go. I've been reading it aloud to my buddy Tamora Pierce, and she has pronounced it good, which is a considerable relief. She also laughed hysterically at me the other day when I said, “I thought I was going to be able to bring this in at between four and five hundred pages, but I think it may get bigger than that!” “You just figuring that out?” she asked. This was not entirely kind of her, but it gives you an indication of what I'm dealing with here.
In other news: I hope to have a blog up on the Unicorn Chronicles website soon where I can post regular updates on my progress. Wish me luck!
For you Moongobble and Me fans, watch for the new adventure, The Mischief Monster, coming later this year.
Thanks for checking in with us!

*New* - Bruce's Blog:
Welcome to the Blog
July, 2008: Okay, in an effort to be more in touch, I'm going to try to update all my blogs more often. (The fact that I have a blog here, another on MySpace, another on Full Cast Audio, and another on the Unicorn Chronicles home page does complicate things a bit!)

On Saturday night (December 6th) Harding College, in Searcy, Arkansas,
will be hosting an unusual event: a live performance by four members of
the Full Cast Audio group: Daniel Bostick, Carmen Viviano-Crafts,
Tamora Pierce, and, um . . . ME! We'll be performing short stories and
excerpts from books by Tammy and me, and possibly a couple of
surprises. Tammy and I will be autographing books at the end of the
performance.
It's open to the public, and tickets ($15) are still available, so if you're in the area, come on over!

DARK WHISPERS: Not only in the house, but in the stores!
Well, the official on sale date for DARK WHISPERS (Book 3 of the Unicorn Chronicles) was supposed to be August 1, but it turns out that Amazon.com started shipping it this week. And friends have been reporting occasional sightings at Barnes & Noble stores around the country. So I guess it escaped early. (Those crazy unicorns!)
Hope y'all will enjoy it!

Spring Travel
So, the spring travel season is nearly over. This is the time of year when I disappear from my neighborhood and become a stranger to my family so I can zip all around the country (or sometimes the world) speaking to kids in schools. So far this year I've been in California, Arizona, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Connecticut, with trip to Illinois and Pennsylvania still to come. Oh, yeah - also three weeks in China!
This is all fun, but meanwhile the work piles up at home, and mail goes unanswered, and I generally get behinder and behinder in the rest of my real life. But I can't really complain (except about how sucky the airlines are these days) because I love doing it.
Still, it's always a bit of a relief when it's over so I can start catching up on all the things I've let slide while I was traveling.

A lovely award for THE PRINCE OF BUTTERFLIES!
I just received word that my picture book, THE PRINCE OF BUTTERFLIES, has received the 2008 Giverny Award, which is given annually to a children's science picture book. For more details, here's a link:
http://www.15degreelab.com/award08.html
I'm especially pleased about this for two reasons. First, while I think PRINCE is one of my very best books, it did not receive much attention when it was first published, and didn't do as well as we had hoped. So to have this sudden confirmation of the book's worth some years after its release is lovely indeed.
Second, the book is a fantasy. So it delights me to have the distinguished scientists who select this award confirm its solid ecological/science foundation.

Bad, bad blogger!
Man, I have not done a very good job of posting here this last year.
Ah, well. Like most years since I started Full Cast Audio, it's been wildly busy. Not that things weren't busy before that. But now that I'm trying to do two things full time, it's a bit harder to keep it all under control.
WRITING: Right now I'm trying to finish the 5th "Moongobble and Me" book, which is called (for the moment, at least) The Naughty Nork. It's going to be a bit longer than the previous ones, and I hope it will, as a result, be even more fun. I've got it half written and all outlined, and just have to find time (and self-discipline!) to get it finished.
As soon as it is done I'll shift right back to Luster and get cracking on the fourth book for the Unicorn Chronicles, which I am bound and determined to finish this year. It's going to be called The Last Hunt (which, of course, was what I thought was going to be the title for Book 3, but I had to shift the title over . . .)
I have three weeks before my first speaking trip of the year. I love doing school appearances, but it's when I hit the road that things start to really pile up here in the office, so I always flinch a bit about it, too.
Well, that's it for the year's end report, at least for now.

I spent some time today going over page proofs of the fourth book in the "Moongobble and Me" series, which is called THE MISCHIEF MONSTER. I think it's the funniest one yet. But what do I know . . .
I don't know if I've told you guys, but my pal Tamora Pierce and I read to each other from our current project almost every day when we're both in town. (Tammy and her husband Tim moved to Syracuse last summer.) Right now she's reading to me from MELTING STONES, the fabulous novel she's written for Full Cast Audio to record, while I've been reading to her from the stories I'm working on for ODDEST OF ALL, a collection that Harcourt will be publishing this fall. I think this works for Tammy - I know it works for me, since I made a major breakthrough on one of the stories because of something she said to me during one of our reading sessions.

The Shopping Cart is Ready!
This, methinks, is very cool. Our webmaster has put the finishing touches on the shopping cart. Now you can order the books on line, and include the name to which you want each one autographed.
Hope you find it useful!

Just back from a writing retreat where I was working on (what else?) the third book in the Unicorn Chronicles. (I wouldn't dare admit it if I had been working on anything else!)
It felt great to be away from the office and focus totally on writing. Reminded me that that was what I used to do!

Okay, okay, so it's been umpty-kabillion years since I posted anything here. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
Actually, while it's mostly my fault, I did try to post twice, and both times there was a problem with my link. So I'm only going to take part of the rap for this. Even so, as many people (especially my webmaster!) have pointed out to me, I should either use the blog, or get rid of it.
So: I'm using it!
Mostly I've been on the road for the last few months, with speaking gigs in Texas, Wyoming, Washington state, Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas (again), Iowa, and I forget where else. I'm on the road again now, but for a different reason: I'm hiding away for a few days to try to get some writing done!
Wish me luck . . .

Oh, man, it's been a long time -- too long -- since I added anything to this blog. That's mostly because the travel madness continues. I'm in Pennsylvania right now, down in the gorgeous Brandywine area, doing four days of school presentations.
Saturday I performed with the Syracuse Symphony, reading my story "The Golden Sail" while the orchestra played gorgeous music to enhance the emotional punch of the story. This is one of my favorite things in the world to do.

March is another travel month. I'll be on the road soon, speaking in Marcellus (a town near Syracuse) on Tuesday, then heading for NYC on Wednesday. I'll be speaking at a school in New Jersey on Thursday and having some business meetings on Friday, then driving home on Saturday. I always try to do some writing while I'm in travel mode, but the truth is, it's kind of tricky.
What's on the plate right now? Well, I'm putting the polishes on the fourth Moongobble and Me book, THE MISCHIEF MONSTER. I actually wrote this one last March. Kathy has the art all finished (and it's great!), but I have to do the final tweaking on the text. I'll let you know when we have a pub date.
Since I'm working in that world right now, it seemed like a good time to start the next MOONGOBBLE; in fact, I wrote the first chapter just a couple of days ago.
And, no, that doesn't mean I've set aside work on THE LAST HUNT! I'm pushing toward four hundred pages now. . .
