Dyeing Dinosaur Eggs

Grade Levels: 1 - 3

Objectives

  • Students will experiment.
  • Students will predict.
  • Students will observe.

Materials

  • Eggs
  • Coffee grounds
  • Beet juice
  • Onion skins (yellow)
  • Orange rind
  • 5 pots spinach leaves

Procedures

  1. Place several eggs in each pot with one of the above items to act as a natural dye.
  2. Ask the children to predict what color the eggs will become.
  3. Bring the eggs to a boil and cook for 12-15 minutes.
  4. Remove the eggs, rinse, and cool. Can the children identify the food used to make each color?
  5. Let the children peel the eggs and eat them with salt or pepper if they desire.
Extension Activities:
  • Were the dinosaurs born alive or did they hatch from eggs?
  • What did dinosaur eggs look like? How big were they?
  • Hide the eggs on the playground for the children to find. Are they easy to find? Why? Why not?
  • At Easter time, dye Easter eggs with natural dyes.
