Space Pictures

Grade Levels: K - 3

Objectives
  • Students will experiment with new art techniques.
Materials
  • 12" x 18" white construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Thin black tempura paint
  • Wide paint brushes
Procedures
  1. Instruct each student to draw a space picture using stars, moons, planets, flames from rockets, spaceships, etc.
  2. Remind students to color very heavily with the crayons (not pressing heavily but going over the drawing with the crayon several times). Some areas should be solid color.
  3. Paint over the picture with the thin, runny black paint to make the background look like outer space.
    HINTS:
  • The paint should be thick enough to turn the paper black, but thin enough to run off the crayoned parts.
  • Cover a table with newspaper for three or four students to paint at once.
