Our First Classroom Book

Grade Levels: K - 8

Objectives

  • Students will share an experience from their summer vacations with fellow classmates by drawing and writing about their experiences.
  • Students will compile their completed works into a class book.
  • Students will begin to feel a sense of classroom community.

Materials

  • Paper (either white copy paper or construction paper)
  • Pencils
  • Art media
  • A way to publish the student's book (binding machine, stapler, yarn, rings, etc.)

Procedures

  1. Have students brainstorm about something fun, exciting, or memorable they did over the summer vacation.
  2. On construction paper (preferably white) or copy paper, students draw a picture which describes their favorite summer vacation experience. The students should add color to and write a few sentences on the drawing.
  3. When students are finished collect the pieces and place them inside two additional pieces of construction paper.
  4. As a class, decide on a title for your first class book and how to decorate the cover. Decide what to call the class, who "the author" shall be.
  5. Bind your new book together. Laminating the cover helps preserve the life of your book, as well.
  6. Enjoy the book. Read it to the class and place it in your classroom library to be checked out later and re-read.
