Australia Poster

Grade Levels: 5 - 7

Objectives

  • Students will learn about Australia.
  • Students will make a poster displaying facts about Australian geography, government, trivia, and history.

Materials

Procedures

  1. Xerox the map of Australia, enlarging it to a size that will look good in the center of a piece of poster board.
  2. Distribute the handouts and go over them with the students.
  3. Tell students that they will be creating a poster about Australia that includes at least five facts that they find interesting about the country.
  4. Give students time to select their favorite facts from the handouts.
  5. Distribute five index cards to each child and ask him/her to write one fact per card.
  6. Instruct students to illustrate each card making it colorful and easy to understand. Remind them to use only one side of the card because it will be stuck to their posters.
  7. Give each student a piece of Poster Board and instruct them to paste the map of Australia in the center.
  8. Ask students to arrange their cards around the map, making sure to put the appropriate fact near the correct location on the map (if relevant).
  9. Have students glue or tape the cards to the poster.
  10. If there is a correlation between the fact and the map, ask students to draw an arrow between the fact and its location on the map.
  11. Display the posters on the walls of the classroom and pretend that it is an art gallery. Ask students to walk around the room and take notes as they read the posters.
  12. Have a class discussion about what new facts students learned about Australia.
