Amazing Ampato Ice Maiden Fact Sheet
In 1990 in the Andes, a mountain range in Peru, a volcanic peak began erupting. Its eruption sent hot ash to the nearby mountain Nevado Ampato, and melted away some of the ice and snow on its summit. Eventually, the sun melted away more of Ampato's frozen cap, and revealed land that had been covered for the past five hundred years.
In September 1995, anthropologist Dr. Johan Reinhard and his climbing partner
Miguel Zarate set out on an expedition to explore the newly-uncovered land.
In a crater near the summit, they discovered a cloth bundle.
The bundle turned out to be the five-hundred-year-old
mummy of a teenage girl ! The climbers immediately recognized that
this was an important archeological discovery. They photographed the site
and collected some of the artifacts nearby.
Reinhard and Zarate then faced the difficult challenge of carrying the fragile, wrapped mummy down the mountain. They then transported her, still frozen, to a research center for examination.
The Ampato Ice Maiden is the first frozen female mummy to be found anywhere in the Andes. Tests on her preserved clothing and the nearby artifacts will give anthropologists new information about her culture and people. Tests on her frozen body will reveal more about health and nutrition during her lifetime, and even who her modern-day relatives might be!
