Life in Ancient India

Objectives
- Students will use vocabulary related to life in Ancient India.
- Students will learn about everyday life in the ancient Indus Valley.
- Students will speculate about what Ancient Indian language might reveal about its people.
- Students will appreciate the contributions of Ancient India to our modern world.
Materials
- Life in Ancient India worksheet
- Indus Valley Civilization Daily Life website

Procedures
- Introduce key vocabulary: advanced, amulet, flourish, import, pictograph, reservoir.
- Have students work individually or with partners to complete the Life in Ancient India worksheet as they visit Indus Valley Civilization Daily Life.
- Set up a time when students can share the information they discovered.
Assessment
Use a rubric to assess students' ability to take notes and develop an understanding of life in Ancient India.
Extension Activities
- Choose from a large collection of cross-curricular activities for all grade levels.
- The Ancient Indians left us lots of clues about their civilizations. Have students work in small groups to build a time capsule representing their own world for future civilizations to discover.
- Have students create labels for each item, giving a brief explanation of its significance.
- Display the open time capsules in your school for a period of time before choosing a site where you'd like to bury them.
