Colonial Children
Grade Levels: 3 - 5
Overview
Students discover what life was like for kids living in 18th century colonial Pennsylvania, and recognize that they have more in common with them than they imagined.
Objectives
- Students will use vocabulary related to 18th century colonial life.
- Students will learn about daily life of kids in 18th century Pennsylvania.
- Students will understand how kids in the 18th century, like kids today, were shaped in part by their environment.
- Students will recognize similarities between the lives of colonial kids and their own lives.
Materials
Procedure
- Introduce key vocabulary: apprentice,
card, shear, spit, tavern, weave
- Have students work individually, or with partners to complete the Colonial Life Worksheet while they visit Colonial Kids .
Assessment
Use a rubric to assess students' ability to take notes and understand aspects of colonial life.Extension
- Invite students to make a list of foods that they eat, clothes that they wear, tools and other materials that they use in their everyday life, along with illustrations. Then have them exchange information and try to draw conclusions about each other's lives.
