Exploring Addition Patterns -- Assessment Questions

  • Use an addition fact to find the sum of 80 + 50 = 130. (You can use the addition fact that 8 + 5 = 13, then place a zero to the right.)

  • 52 + 0 = (52). What property did you use? (Zero Property)

  • What property does 4 + 2 = 2 + 4 show? (Order Property)

  • What basic fact can you use to find 600 + 300? Explain. (6 + 3 = 9; 6 hundreds + 3 hundreds = 9 hundreds.)

  • True or false: If you add hundreds, the sum will always have 2 zeros. (False. 500 + 500 = 10 hundreds or 1,000.) Ask how this fact relates to 50 + 50. (50 + 50 = 10 tens or 100.)

  • Can you use the basic fact that 2 + 3 = 5 to find 20 + 300? (No. The non-zero digits do not have the same place value.)
